Designed in the mid 1950’s, this massive residential area in Caracas was intended to house 60,000 people, mostly military families. The coup d’état of 1958, however, would change the community’s destiny forever. Thousands of families, mostly those without appropriate housing, took over the 80 mega-blocks, some with over 450 apartments each.
The community would never be known as Urbanización 2 de Diciembre, as the blueprints read, but instead it has been called Comunidad del 23 de Enero ever since, in celebration of the day the take over occurred as well as the fall of Dictator Pérez Jiménez.
During the second half of the 20th century, the community established itself as a vanguard for progressive change and political violence often flared, as urban guerilla groups flourished as well. Today, it is comprised of avid supporters of President Chavez’ Bolivarian Revolution.
